Lecture Theatre and teaching space upgrade at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

The Royal Lancaster Infirmary is part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. The Education Centre offers a venue used by all healthcare disciplines for meetings, seminars, workshops, national and regional courses.

The Lecture Theatre and Seminar Room within the hospital’s Education Centre is the main delivery point for corporate induction and staff training.

The Brief

The hospital wanted to update the technology within the Lecture Theatre to create a better in-room experience for both the audience and presenter. Key areas for improvement included enhanced sound and image quality along with straightforward user control.

The project demanded a solution to enhance the experience within the Education Centre’s Lecture Theatre and connected Seminar Room. The room can be used as one large lecture hall or divided into two separate teaching areas. When divided the larger room has fixed raked seating, while the smaller of the two has flexible seating that can be rearranged to accommodate group working or a formal presentation layout.

In both scenarios, the Trust required clear displays, good quality sound reproduction and easy control.

The Solution

The solution provided by Pure AV allows the same projector to be used in the large Lecture Theatre in both room layouts without compromising on image quality with the room user triggering the automatic adjustment of the projector image with a single button press.

The choice of the Epson EB-L1300U and ELPLM15 mid throw lens offered the crisp image reproduction the application required, and the lens memory function enabled Pure AV to program the system to enable easy, automatic optimisation of the projector image to meet the different room configurations.

The addition of a Philips 75” commercial display to act as the main screen for the smaller teaching area in split room layout enhances the original room set up.

Each room is equipped with a traditional style lectern from where the presenter can take full control of the environment. The AMX touch panel is programmed with a simple user interface to ensure that the room control is straightforward.

The Results

Pure AV was able to provide Royal Lancaster Infirmary with an easy to use system that enhances the experience of both room users and support staff.

One of the biggest differences for the staff that manage the Lecture Theatre is the reduction in support calls. As Leanne Benson, Postgraduate Medical Education Manager, explained,

The room is easy to use; we are not getting as many requests for assistance and support, so I think that shows how user-friendly it is.

The installation was carried out with care and to ensure minimum disruption to the centre; an approach appreciated by Education Centre Assistant, Caroline Carson Brown.

The Pure AV team were a pleasure to work with. The installation engineer’s technical knowledge was exceptional. They managed to carry out the installation in a way that didn’t affect the day to day operation of the education centre.
